HOW I LEARNT MORE ABOUT BRANDING WHILST VOLUNTEERING FOR A CHARITY THAN I DID WORKING FOR YEARS AT SAATCHI & SAATCHI

Bob Maddams - Communications consultant & Refugee Support Ambassador

In this fascinating half-hour talk Bob Maddams explains that when he was tasked with creating new brand positioning for a charity, the experience taught him more than anything he’d ever learnt working for high profile brands across his career.

This is the story of how a small independent charity grew into an organisation that has sent hundreds of volunteers from over 20 countries to help & support refugees in crisis. It tells how Refugee Support has redefined the aid model putting human dignity at the centre of everything it does. It’s an object lesson in brand building that shows SMEs & social enterprises how to follow a simple 3-step process of brand positioning, brand communication & brand management. Bob will also take you behind the headlines to reveal what it’s like working for a refugee charity dealing with refugees on the ground close to the front lines, & why many volunteers say it’s a life-changing experience.

More about Bob

Bob is an ex-advertising copywriter who has created advertising campaigns for British Airways, Barclays, Inter-Continental Hotels & Ferrari to name a few. He’s also an ambassador for Refugee Support, a charity that runs operations in Cyprus & in Moldova for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

More about Refugee Support

Refugee Support was founded in 2016 in response to governmental failure across Europe to protect and support people who had fled violent conflict—a failure which continues to this day. Outside of Europe, the situation is often worse.

Refugees regularly end up in terrible accommodation, barely able to make ends meet. We provide practical help and let refugees know they are welcome and that we care about them. Through our pioneering Dignity Centre model, we give people choices and offer a sense of normality. Read more here
